Hunger Pangs

So the Child Health Nurse came out today for her first visit, and now we know why Spudly has been crying so much.

He's hungry.

In two weeks he's only gained 120g. It should be double that. He hasnt even got back to his birthweight yet.

First my uterus is unremarkable, then my ovaries are polycystic, my placenta is too low, then my cervix doesnt want to open, and now my boobs arent producing the goods.

Is there ANY part of my body that would like to function properly?

  1. A lot of women swear by Fenugreek (an herbal suppliment) to assist with milk production.

    Sending you some milky vibes.

  2. Dont be afraid to use formula to top spudly up! Rowan didnt put on any weight after elaving the hospital and I started to tank him with formula while madly expressing to stimulate my supply. He was 6 weeks old before I could manage all his feeds by myself!

9 months later, and I still take fenugreek. My supply is quite healthy and I smell like maple syrup all the time. ;)

I had to basically sit in the chair and feed Dude 24/7 for him to gain weight [he lost a whole heap after being born]. It was during Hurricane Katrina and so I was basically glued to the 24 hour news channel watching that. I was so tempted to switch to formula but was told the more formula he drinks the less milk I would produce. But every now and again I needed a rest. I can relate to what Kath wrote.

    Yeah, yeah, good times [not!].

  4. Don't feel bad. It has been picked now. Hope the feeding goes better and Spudly gains weight.

  5. I had to pump pump pump and let him suck til he wouldn't suck anymore. I used the formula sparingly and was glued to the pump. Even with all my issues I nursed for 16 months. Don't worry lots of women have this prolbem.

  6. my mom came in and told me while I was sitting in the loo, you must be heartbroken. I'm so sorry he's hungry. It'll be fixed now right? I confess I was going to get formula today myself because I'm so damn tired but I couldn't walk all the way to the store.

That happened to Oscar too, Panda. I was really upset, but he definately made up for it after he was 4 weeks old!

I expressed every shower, and have been drinking FENNEL tea! LOL, I think the midwife made a mistake, from what you all say, Ill start on Fenugreek asap!

Whatever you do, DONT feel miserable about this, you are not a failure, you have a beautiful baby boy to prove that! He will gain weight.

I learnt with my Twins that as soon as they cry, feed them... I do the same with Oscar and it really builds your supply, and keeps them happy!

    Good luck!

  8. I read about guiness being great for milk production as well and I swear by it. Even a half glass of Champagne I have found helpfull.
